Bertolini’s boy lands G2 Duke Of York Stakes

12/05/10 - Second win in four days for ultra-tough Prime Defender

Just four days after winning a conditions race at Haydock, Prime Defender returned triumphant to the winner’s enclosure after beating an impressive field in the G2 Duke Of York Stakes on the first day of the Dante meeting.

The Bertolini six-year-old has won three Listed races during his career and has been Group-placed but this is his first success at Group level. He overturned the Khalid Abdullah-owned duo of Showcasing and Main Aim, while Australian Group I winner Starspangledbanner, now with Aidan O’Brien, was back in fifth.

Tilts at Group One sprints this summer are now on the cards for Prime Defender, who has entries for the G1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Darley July Cup.

Bertolini is also the sire of Group One-winning fillies Donna Blini and Juice and the Group Three-winning sprinter Moorhouse Lad, who was runner-up to Marchand d’Or in the G1 Prix de l’Abbaye.
