Strong store market for Kayf Tara

30/06/10 - Seven lots sold for an average of €45,250 at Derby Sale

Colm Murphy, the trainer of Brave Inca and Big Zeb, took home the highest priced Kayf Tara store from Tattersalls Ireland’s Derby sale when buying a three-year-old out of the five-time winner Pousettiere Deux for €85,000.

Consigned by Mr and Mrs A S O’Brien, the unbroken gelding is a full-brother to Tara Royal, who has won twice over hurdles and once between the flags.

Ben Case and Kevin Ross signed the ticket for a €55,000 gelding, also three, out of One Of Those Days, whose winners include Carnival Town. One Of Those Days is a Soviet Lad half-sister to the Stayers’ Hurdle winner Anzum and multiple winners Jazilah and Sh Boom.

Glasscorn Stables paid €42,000 to secure a half-brother to the multiple hurdles winner Timeless Chick from the Shanaville Stables draft. The gelding’s dam Be My Bird has visited Kayf Tara three times and has a bumper-placed six-year-old and a yearling colt.

Ballybin Stud consigned a gelding from the black type flat mare Squaw Talk, by Gulch, who has already produced a bumper winner by Kayf Tara named Westmeath. Her three-year-old sold for €40,000 to James Nolan.

A shrewd selector of jumping stock, trainer Nick Williams, who does so well with young French-breds, opted to add a son of Kayf Tara to his string when going to €38,000 for an unbroken gelding out of Smart Topsy, dam of the dual steeplechase winner Smart Cavalier.

The seven lots by Kayf Tara sold at Fairyhouse resulted in an encouraging average of €45,250 during a testing period for store sales.

As well as being highly sought after in Ireland, Kayf Tara was honoured at the TBA Awards dinner in Newmarket on Monday evening, when Simon Sweeting was presented with the Whitbread Silver Salver for Kayf Tara having been the leading active British-based National Hunt stallion for the 2008/09 jumping season.

Sadly the Hawk wing yearling filly had to put down 24 hours after her operation. She was in alot of pain which the vets couldn't reduce with drugs so they felt it was best to put her out of her misery. Although we are now left with just a very large bill for her care at least I know that everything that could have been done was done. We are also going to be looking for a new permenant member of staff this autumn as Vikki Chorley is leaving us after 4 years to ride eventers. Vikki was in charge of one of the yards so is a senior member of staff and I expect will be hard to replace.

After reporting some Overbury bred winners last week we are now experiencing the flipside of breeding (or generally looking after livestock). The yearling out of Flying Finsh - a filly by Hawk Wing - showed signs of colic on monday. She was checked by a vet who gave some pain killer and muscle relaxant. There was no sign of a twisted gut and she settled back to normal very quickly. All was well until wednesday morning when she again showed signs of colic, but this time her heart rate and temperature where raised. She went straight into the vets clinic where an infection in her gut - peritonitis - was confirmed. We had hoped that a heavy dose of antibiotisc might cure the problem but this morning she sickened quite rapidly. The vets advice was then there was no choise other than to operate and hope to find a problem. I have just been told that they have found an abscess on the outside of the gut which will have to be removed. Chance of sucess is rated at less than 50% and the operation is an expensive one. The only good thing is that if she survives there shouldn't be any recurring problems as a result of this. In the meantime we just have to wait and hope. (I'm away until the end of next week but will give a follow up on my return).
