Mega start for Megastar

19/11/10 - Kayf Tara gelding highly impressive on hurdles debut; Altan Khan scores in Scotland

Statuesque Kayf Tara gelding Megastar, winner of the G2 John Smith’s Champion National Hunt Flat Race at Aintree last season, looks to be as effective as a jumper as he did in his bumpers after recording a resounding 16-length victory at Ascot on Friday.

The five-year-old cruised up to challenge former high-class flat horse Smokey Oakey on the turn for home and soon had a commanding lead from the second last flight, from which he ran home readily to cross the line in splendid isolation.

Bred by Pleasure Palace Racing, Megastar is out of the Karinga Bay mare Megalex and races for a syndicate which includes his breeder Jeremy Hinds. Like his full-sister Megasue, he is now a three-time winner. Megasue has won three and placed five times in nine starts, while Megastar has won three and finished runner-up from just five starts.

Kayf Tara enjoyed a double on Friday when Altan Khan, who was bred by Mrs M Barker, became a winner on his handicap debut in the two-mile hurdle at Musselburgh and looks every bit a chaser in the making.
