Stravara, Mad Max and Carruthers star in another good weekend for Kayf Tara

Stravara, who first visited the winner’s enclosure as a two-year-old when winning on only his third start, added a hurdles victory to his resumé with success at Warwick on Saturday, 9 February.

His win for owner/breeder Eric Bennion came just fifteen minutes after Mad Max kept his unbeaten record intact with a convincing victory in a competitive Grade 2 Bumper at Newbury, where he saw off fancied rivals in The Nightingale and The Old Pretender. The strapping gelding, who races for Carole Skipworth and his breeder Paul Murphy, is the third Graded winner for his sire but is likely to swerve the Champion Bumper at Cheltenham with his trainer Nicky Henderson indicating that his future lies in staying chases. A day earlier, Carruthers, who certainly is Cheltenham-bound, extended his winning record to three with an all-the-way win at Bangor. The five-year-old’s opponents included a pair of smart chasers, A Glass In Thyne and Innox, who filled the minor places but finished 25 lengths adrift of the bold front-runner. The trio of wins takes Kayf Tara’s record for the jumps season to 22 individual winners of 35 races and keeps him at the head of the British-based National Hunt sires’ table as of Sunday, 10 February.
