Bannock given joint-top juvenile rating

05/06/11 - Bertolini colt earns Timeform mark of 108

Bannock, a dual winner and Listed runner-up, has earned a Timeform rating of 108, making him the joint top-rated juvenile of the season so far, along with Power and Tough As Nails.

The Bertolini two-year-old, who was bred by Darley from the Red Ransom mare Laoub and races for Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed al Maktoum, started his campaign on 30 April, when running second in a five-furlong Doncaster maiden. It didn’t take long for him to shed his maiden tag, with a four-and-half length victory coming ten days later over the same distance at Redcar.

His win tally doubled a week later at Windsor where he made almost all the running and held on well to score by a neck. A step up to Listed class for the National Stakes at Sandown saw Bannock go down fighting by three-quarters of a length when finishing runner-up to the highly regarded Exceed And Excel colt Pyman’s Theory.

His next start will be at Royal Ascot, where he is likely to line up for the G2 Norfolk Stakes. The Mark Johnston-trained colt also holds an entry for the G2 Railway Stakes at the Curragh on 26 June.

Bertolini sired two new maiden winners in the past week, with two-year-old filly Inetrobil winning by an impressive six lengths on debut for owner/breeder Pat Beirne on 31 May, and three-year-old Coprah landing a six-furlong Curragh maiden by a length and a half on 3 June.
