Bertolini firing in the winners

02/08/11 – Five winners in the last six days plus Group 2 runner-up for Overbury stalwart

The last week has seen a rash of winners for Bertolini and a Group 2 runner-up finish for two-year-old Bannock, who was second to Harbour Watch in the Richmond Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Prime Defender, winner last year of the G2 Duke Of York Stakes, posted a two-and-three-quarter-length strike in a conditions race at Doncaster on Saturday and is likely to head next to the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury. Bred by Christopher Mason, he has now won eight races and has been placed nine times, with earnings in excess of £270,000.

Andrasta made it a quick Saturday double for Bertolini when winning the Lady Amateur Riders’ Handicap at Thirsk under Carol Bartley. The six-year-old mare is now a five-time winner for her owner/trainer Alan Berry and was bred by Peter Barclay.

Two days earlier, three-year-old Labore posted his second victory when winning over a mile at Nottingham. Out of Hoh Intrepid, by Namid, he was bred by Brook Stud Bloodstock.

The tough front-running sprinter Tyfos will now be seeking a hat-trick following back-to-back victories at Newmarket on 15 July and Newbury on 31 July, which extended his winning tally to six.

A consistent performer for his owner/breeders J Tomlinson and Glyn Williams, Tyfos first won as a two-year-old and is still going strong at the age of six.

Monday saw the Peter Savill-bred San Cassiano record his fourth win, this time over ten furlongs at Ripon. He has now won in each of his three seasons in training, including on his debut as a two-year-old.
