Festival success for Kayf Tara's Alfie Sherrin

Overbury resident enjoys yet another winner at Cheltenham 16 March 2012

Alfie Sherrin posted a memorable opening day victory in the Grade 3 JLT Speciality Handicap Chase at Cheltenham to give his sire Kayf Tara a second Festival winner.

His owner JP McManus and trainer Jonjo O’Neill later captured the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Synchronised, by Kayf Tara’s sire Sadler’s Wells, and they have also tasted Grand National success with Don’t Push It, which is the route they hope Alfie Sherrin will take in the future.

Alfie Sherrin’s first win under Rules came in November 2008 when he landed a Chepstow bumper. Since then, he has won two hurdle races and two chases and was placed in the Listed Silver Trophy Hurdle. He was also a point-to-point winner for Richard Barber.

The nine-year-old was sold at the DBS August sale in 2010 as part of the Harry Findlay dispersal and made £110,000 when bought by O’Neill from Paul Nicholls’ stable.

Another Kayf Tara gelding to gain black type at this year’s Cheltenham Festival was the Paul Webber-trained Cantlow, who was third in the Listed Pertemps Final, the race won the three years ago by Kayf Aramis.
