Bertolini’s grand-daughter Gentildonna lifts Japan Cup

Fourth Grade 1 victory of the year for the Triple Crown winner 26 November 2012

Gentildonna, whose dam Donna Blini was a Group 1-winning member of Bertolini’s first crop, became the first three-year-old filly to win the Japan Cup, adding the prestigious Grade 1 event to her success in the Fillies’ Triple Crown this season.

Donna Blini, who was bred by Gordon Thom and raced for Brian Meehan, won the Cheveley Park Stakes and Cherry Hinton Stakes in 2005 and was sold the following year for 500,000gns at Tattersalls to Katsumi Yoshida. After export to Japan she was covered by Deep Impact and has produced two stakes winners from her first two foals, with Gentildonna’s year-older sister Donau Blue having won a Grade 3 in Japan earlier this year as well as finishing runner-up in the Grade 1 Victoria Mile.

Bertolini is also the broodmare sire of Amaron, winner of the Group 1 Premio Vittorio di Capua in September. The Genesis Green Stud-bred three-year-old son of Shamardal is also a dual Group 3 and Listed winner.

In 2013, Bertolini is standing at Overbury Stud for £3,000 (October 1, Special Live Foal).
