Former Overbury stallion Bertolini dies in France

The 17-year-old suffers a heart attack in his new home at Haras des Faunes
3 May 2013

We are sad to report that Bertolini, a great favourite for all of us here at Overbury Stud, has died in France at the age of 17. The son of Danzig suffered a heart attack after covering a mare during his first season at Haras des Faunes.

It was a pleasure to have Bertolini with us here at Overbury for the first four seasons of his stud career and to see him earn the accolade of champion first-season sire in 2005. After three years at Kildangan Stud and Dalham Hall Stud, we were delighted to welcome him back in 2009 and to stand him through to his final full season last year.

A fomer high-class sprinter for Sheikh Mohammed, Bertolini will be best remembered from his stud career for his first-crop Group 1-winning daughter Donna Blini, who, following her export to Japan, has produced the Japanese Horse of the Year Gentildonna and dual Group 3 winner Donau Blue.

In Europe, Bertolini’s top representatives included the Group-winning sprinters Prime Defender and Moorhouse Lad, along with the 13-time winner Suits Me, 113-rated Bannock, and another prolific performer Mac Gille Eoin.

From his time at stud in New Zealand he also sired Group 1 winner Juice and Group 2 winner Puttanesca, while two of his daughters excelled in India last season, with Vijays Pride winning two Group 1 contests and Portia landing the Group 2 Juvenile Million.
