Second Grade 1 success for Lieutenant Colonel

Double for Kayf Tara at Leopardstown as Identity Thief steals opener
28 December 2014

Twenty-four hours after Special Tiara’s rousing victory in the Grade 2 Desert Orchid Chase at Kempton, another two of Kayf Tara’s offspring played starring roles at Leopardstown’s big Christmas meeting, including a second Grade 1 win for Lieutentant Colonel.

The Gigginstown House Stud-owned five-year-old triumphed in last month’s Hatton’s Grace Hurdle at Fairyhouse and was back for more on Sunday with a stoic victory over Jetson and Monksland in the Christmas Hurdle.

Bred in Britain by Heather Calzini, Lieutentant Colonel’s antics last season, when he won a Grade 2 novice hurdle at Fairyhouse, helped to earn his breeder the Dudgeon Cup at the TBA Awards in July for National Hunt Broodmare of the Year. His dam Agnese (Abou Zouz) is a half-sister to the winning hurdler Toubeera and Lieutenant Colonel is her second foal.

Earlier on the card, Identity Thief, who had posted a winning bumper debut on the day of the Hatton’s Grace Hurdle, made a successful transition to hurdles and is now unbeaten in his two starts.

Irish-bred by Cathal Ennis, the four-year-old is also owned by Gigginstown House Stud after being sold for €40,000 at three and is described by jockey Bryan Cooper as “a very exciting prospect”.
