Thistlecrack dazzles at Aintree

Seven-year-old becomes the fourth individual Grade 1 winner for Kayf Tara
10 April 2015

Kayf Tara celebrated his fourth Grade 1 winner at Aintree’s Grand National meeting on Friday with the emphatic 13-length win of Thistlecrack in the Doom Bar Sefton Novices’ Hurdle for Colin Tizzard and Tom Scudamore.

The seven-year-old was bred by Robin and Scarlett Knipe of Cobhall Court Stud and is out of the Ardross mare Ardstown. In her racing days, the Venetia Williams-trained Ardstown was an adversary of Carruthers’ and Coneygree’s dam Plaid Maid, whom she beat in a handicap chase at Newbury in 2001.

Thistlecrack is still relatively lightly raced but has now garnered four wins from his eight starts. He could be seen next in the three-mile novice hurdle at Punchestown next month and will be campaigned over fences next season, according to his trainer.

He joins Planet Of Sound, Special Tiara and Lieutenant Colonel on the list of top-flight winners for Kayf Tara, who is once again leading all British-based National Hunt sires with more almost £1.3 million in progeny earnings for the season.
