Trio of winners gets new year off to a flyer

It has been a happy new year for Overbury Stud protégés, with three horses raised at the stud having saluted the judge within a week in early January.

Weet By Far started the ball rolling with her win at Wolverhampton on 12 January. Having just turned three, the Bertolini filly built on several placed efforts as a juvenile to defy top weight in a seven-furlong handicap in the colours of Ed Weetman. Out of the G3-winning Kahyasi mare Shaiybara, Weet By Far is a half-sister to two winners in Shaiyran and Shaiyzima. She was bred by Jocelyn Targett, whose mares are permanent boarders here at Overbury Stud. From the same Aga Khan family as Sendawar, Shaiybara shares her third dam, Shahana, with fellow Overbury resident Proclamation, to whom she is currently in foal.

Bertolini struck again the following day with a second win for Mogok Ruby, this time at Kempton. The first foal of Days Of Grace (Wolfhound), the grey was bred by R Pain and has finished in the money in more than half his runs for the Ruby Partnership. Like Shaiybara, Days Of Grace is also in foal to Proclamation, whose first crop will be on the ground in the coming weeks.

Jocelyn Targett’s run of luck continued on 18 January when Agent Almeida showed his appreciation for the sea air by winning at Cagnes-Sur-Mer over a mile in his breeder’s colours. The three-year-old Dubai Destination half-brother to the Group-placed filly Mrs Snow (Singspiel) had shown some decent form at the back end of his juvenile year with several placed efforts.

Agent Almeida is trained in Germany by Mario Hofer and has been well travelled since his days at Overbury, having raced in three different countries in only five starts. His American-bred dam Shining Vale (Twilight Agenda) is back in foal to Singspiel. Her filly by Diktat fetched 42,000gns during Book 1 of Tattersalls’ October Sale last autumn.
