Dual-hemisphere success for Bertolini 15/12/08

A Bertolini half-brother to Racing Post Trophy runner-up Winged Cupid fetched the equivalent of €155,340 (£139,400) when selling at the Honk Kong International breeze-up sale over the weekend. The British-bred gelding is out of Hiwaayati, who has bred four winners to date and has a yearling colt by Zafeen and a filly foal by Proclamation.

New Zealand-bred three-year-old filly Puttanesca became Bertolini’s latest black type performer on Saturday when running third in the G3 Eulogy Stakes at Awapuni. Out of the Prized mare Tesoro, she races in the colours of her breeder, Seaton Park Limited.

Closer to home, the great run of Bertolini two-year-old Smokey Ryder continued when she recorded a hat-trick of wins with victory over five furlongs at Lingfield. Her winning streak started at Great Leighs on 29 October, followed by success at Kempton on 3 December. Prior to this, she also won during the turf season at Folkestone in August. Bred by Jeremy Hinds, Smokey Ryder is a full-sister to Smokey Rye, who is herself a dual winner. Hinds also bred the Kayf Tara mare Megasue, who has been successful in both her starts in bumpers to date and is trained, like the Smokey sisters, by Gary Moore.

We were delighted to share in Bertolini’s success when he was crowned leading first-season sire in 2005. His runners this year have helped him achieve a 38.5% winners to runners strike rate and he is back here at Overbury for the 2009 season at a fee of £4,000 (October 1, Special Live Foal).
