Bertolini truly a horse for all seasons 23/01/09

Bertolini finished on top of the all-weather sires’ table in Britain last season and there’s every indication that he will continue in similarly dominant fashion. 2009 has started well for the Overbury resident with five individual winners in the last few weeks. He’s well on the way to beating his tally of wins for last year, which stood at 47. Currently on 46, only the late Danetime is ahead of him (49) while Bertolini’s individual winners’ tally of 32 is second only to Cape Cross on 35.

Smokey Ryder, Desert Strike, Cheap Thrills, Towy Valley and Mogok Ruby have all put their names on the score sheet this new year and between them, they’ve won 12 races in total. But it’s not just in the UK where the offspring of Bertolini excel. On New Year’s Day, his NZ-bred three-year-old daughter Puttanesca won the G2 NZ Bloodstock Royal Stakes at Ellerslie and in Hong Kong, the former British-trained Plan B (who raced in the UK as Cosmic Art) won the HK$850,000 Hong Kong Challenge Club Cup. In setting a time of 57.78 over the 1000m, he beat two Group winners in Kindacross and Dubai Time. During his time in the UK, Plan B won three races for Ed Dunlop during a lucrative juvenile campaign that also saw him finish third in the £300,000 St Leger Yearling Stakes behind subsequent G1 Middle Park Stakes winner Dark Angel.
