Flying start for Bertolini’s juveniles (06/04/09)

Bertolini’s two-year-olds have never hung around and this season looks to be no exception as he already has two winners on the board courtesy of This Is Real and Monalini.

Both two-year-olds recorded their first win on Friday. Monalini, a colt out of Deauville Listed winner Mona Em (Catrail) won the five-furlong maiden at Mussleburgh. He was bred in Ireland by Dermot Cantillon and Forenaghts Stud and is now in training with Bryan Smart in Yorkshire. Monalini is a half-brother to Nice Applause, who was, like his dam, a Listed winner in France. This Is Real made a winning debut in the colours of her trainer Brian Nolan on the all-weather at Dundalk. Out of the dual-winning Docksider mare Banba, she was bred by Jim Halligan. A consistent source of two-year-old winners, Bertolini’s 2009 juveniles represent his fifth crop. From his first four crops to race he produced 93 winning two-year-olds. On the opening day of the flat turf season, his five-year-old son Prime Defender won the Listed Cammidge Trophy and is entered for the G2 Duke Of York Stakes at York’s May meeting.
