First winner for Zafeen (13/04/09)

Zafeereli became his sire’s first ever winner when scoring by two lengths in the 900m Prix Illinois II at Saint-Cloud on Easter Monday.

Clearly a precocious and speedy type, Zafeereli was also Zafeen’s first runner when making his racecourse debut on 26 March. British-bred by Vidin Gate Stud, the colt is out of Tamesis (Fasliyev) and races in the colours of his trainer Philippe Lacroix.

Zafeen’s fellow Overbury Stud resident Bertolini celebrated a good first-start winner of a three-year-old maiden in Bremen, Germany on Good Friday. Vain Boteli, who won easily by three-and-a-half lengths, was bred in Germany by his owner Stiftung Gestut Fahrhof and is out of the Nashwan mare Vanity Fair.

Bertolini also increased his early lead at the head of the table for sires of leading two-year-olds when the M J Halligan-bred What About Me won a five-furlong maiden at Cork on Monday. With less than a month of the flat turf season gone, he has already sired three juvenile winners, more than any other stallion in Europe.
