Tuesday is the quietest day of the week here - no regular vet visit and no farrier so it is a good day to catch up with all the non essential jobs we are too busy for at other times. We had two tractors harrowing today. This rakes the grass to remove last years dead growth and gives the new grass some air. It can also look very smart when there are stripes across the paddocks!
The water troughs also get cleaned on tuesdays - they tend to get dirty from algae, leaves etc. They are emptied, the sides and bottom are scrubbbed then it's filled again. The water always looks more appetising afterwards!

There are three good indicators that spring is on its way; we can chain harrow the paddocks, there seems to be a horsebox delivering mares coming down the drive every half hour and the first mares of the year are scanned in foal.
All these things have happened this week - and we have even had some sunshine!
One of the great rewards of our job is seeing the foals out in the paddocks and this was the first week of the year that their time in the paddock hasn't been curtailed by foul weather - too cold or too wet but usually both.
Some of the owners of Material World came to see her and her yearling (Ollie) yesterday. She has her own web site (www.materialworld.org.uk)
and has turned into a handsome broodmare. She is waiting for a 16-day scan having been covered by Shirocco.
Don't forget we are not far from Cheltenham racecourse so if you are going to the Festival please feel free to call us and come and have a
look at the stallions.
