ARDAD at Crockfords Stud, DUNADEN at Longholes: a successful December Sales for Overbury swtiches focus from foals to stallions.

After selling the session-topping foal on Saturday – a 110,000 Iffraaj filly bought by  Norris Bloodstock – we brought our new stallion Ardad to Newmarket in the afternoon. The G2-winning son of Kodiac is on show at Crockfords Stud, Woodditton Lane, until Wednesday. Just turn up, or call Simon who will be happy to take you there: it's a short walk from the sales ring.

Delegator already proving popular at new fee

Successful first-season sire Delegator, whose undefeated daughter Delectation ran away with the G3 Firth Of Clyde Stakes, has had his fee raised to £5,000 Oct 1, SLF  – and he is already attracting plenty of mares. 

The highly rated son of Dansili stands at Overbury Stud and has made a decidedly impressive start to his stud career, with seven winners from his first 21 runners. As well as Delectation, who is being pointed towards a 1,000 Guineas campaign, Delegator has sired Accidental Agent, who won the fiercely competitive 26-runner £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes. Clive Cox's impressive Newbury nursery winner Graphite Storm has won his latest two starts and may well progress into Stakes company.

'Big, strong, correct' first foal for Dunaden

A Dunaden colt, who is delighting his breeder Derek Veitch, is the first to be sired by a Melbourne Cup winner standing in Britain since the 1890 hero Carbine.

Foaled at Ringfort Stud, Ireland, in the small hours on 26th January, the bay colt is the first foal of his mother, too – a three-time winning Authorized mare, La Tulipe, who is herself out of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac third, Tulipe Royale. She was the first of 99 mares covered by Dunaden in 2015.

Sheikh Fahad acclaims Dunaden as 'My horse of a lifetime!'

The explosion of Qatari investment in horseracing is largely due to the excitement generated in the Al Thani family by Melbourne Cup winner Dunaden. So says the stallion's owner Sheikh Fahad, in an interview for www.ovstud.co.uk

The Sheikh describes telling his brothers that he had a horse for the Melbourne Cup: 'They thought I was crazy! A lot of them stayed up till four in the morning and watched the race, and cheered him on. I think a lot of their investment in racing worldwide has come about because of Dunaden.' The film shows Sheikh Fahad's delight at winning the trophy. 'All of my family have seen Dunaden do what he has done, and they all want a piece of that and are trying to find a piece of that.'

Dunaden, the first Melbourne Cup hero to stand at stud in Britain since the 1890 winner Carbine, has had his fee set at £3,000 – with a raft of bonuses designed to make the record-breaking three-time G1 winner as attractive to breeders as possible. Rated 130 by Timeform for his form over a mile-and-a-half, Dunaden was retired earlier this year and will stand at Overbury Stud, Gloucestershire. He amassed earnings of more than £5 million and beat no fewer than 60 G1 winners in his 46-race career, among them the QIPCO Champion Stakes favourite Cirrus Des Aigles.
