As the yearling sales season progresses, another 17 yearlings from the first crop of Zafeen are set to pass through the ring in September and October.

The St Leger Festival Sale (10-11 September) includes the first foal from the Victory Note mare Sambarina (lot 89), whose family has received a massive boost since the catalogue was printed courtesy of the G2 July Stakes victory of Classic Blade. His dam Queen Bodicea is a half-sister to Sambarina, as is the Listed winner Meanya.

Lot 223 in the Goffs Million Sale (29 September – 1 October) is a Zafeen half-sister to Confuchias, a Group 3 winner by Cape Cross. Their dam, Schust Madame (Second Set), has a clean sheet of four winners from four runners to date.

Two colts are catalogued in the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale on 2 October. The first, lot 844, is from the Alzao mare Azolia, a half-sister to ten winners. Lot 871 is the first foal of Chase The Lady (Atticus), a half-sister to Group 3 winner Nunatall.

The marathon four-book October sale at Tattersalls kicks off on 7 October with lot 555 in the first part of the sale being reserved for a chestnut colt out of Hiwaayati, whose winning daughter Sweet Emotion is the dam of G1 Racing Post Trophy runner-up Winged Cupid. Like so many of Zafeen’s first book, this is a family which boasts plenty of speed, Hiwaayati’s dam Alathea having produced the Prix Maurice de Gheest winner Lead On Time and Champion sprinter Great Commotion.

Another four Zafeen yearlings appear in Book 2 of the sale. Lindfield Belle’s colt is lot 645 and she is a proven matron with two of her previous offspring, the full-brothers Baltic King and Domingues both being Stakes winners. In total, she has produced seven winners from nine runners.

Signor Peltro’s recent Goodwood win over Bunbury Cup hero Little White Lie has provided a timely update for his Zafeen half-brother which sells as lot 772. His dam Pewter Lass has three multiple winners to her name and a two- and three-year-old brother to Signor Peltro, who is by former Overbury resident Bertolini, in training.

Ceremonial Jade has been running well all season for young trainer Marco Botti and has now won six times and been Listed-placed. His half-brother is scheduled to appear on the Tuesday of Book 2 as lot 958. Beacon Silver, by Belmez, has already produced a two-year-old dual winner, Gramm, and her Zafeen colt is part of Ireland’s Kilminfoyle House Stud consignment (lot 1132).

Mild Deception, a half-sister to Irish Oaks winner Margarula, has bred seven winners from her eight runners. Her colt is lot 1490 in Tattersalls October Book 3, which features six Zafeen yearlings in total. Among them is the first foal from Force In The Wings, an unraced half-sister to Listed winner Nights Cross (lot 1718).

Magical Veil (Majestic Light) has been a consistent producer with seven winners from nine runners to date. Her February-foaled Zafeen colt features in Book 4 (31 October), consigned by Witney Stud.

Sadly the Hawk wing yearling filly had to put down 24 hours after her operation. She was in alot of pain which the vets couldn't reduce with drugs so they felt it was best to put her out of her misery. Although we are now left with just a very large bill for her care at least I know that everything that could have been done was done. We are also going to be looking for a new permenant member of staff this autumn as Vikki Chorley is leaving us after 4 years to ride eventers. Vikki was in charge of one of the yards so is a senior member of staff and I expect will be hard to replace.

After reporting some Overbury bred winners last week we are now experiencing the flipside of breeding (or generally looking after livestock). The yearling out of Flying Finsh - a filly by Hawk Wing - showed signs of colic on monday. She was checked by a vet who gave some pain killer and muscle relaxant. There was no sign of a twisted gut and she settled back to normal very quickly. All was well until wednesday morning when she again showed signs of colic, but this time her heart rate and temperature where raised. She went straight into the vets clinic where an infection in her gut - peritonitis - was confirmed. We had hoped that a heavy dose of antibiotisc might cure the problem but this morning she sickened quite rapidly. The vets advice was then there was no choise other than to operate and hope to find a problem. I have just been told that they have found an abscess on the outside of the gut which will have to be removed. Chance of sucess is rated at less than 50% and the operation is an expensive one. The only good thing is that if she survives there shouldn't be any recurring problems as a result of this. In the meantime we just have to wait and hope. (I'm away until the end of next week but will give a follow up on my return).
