Santorini Star made a winning return to the racecourse at the age of five to land the G2 Jockey Club Stakes in the hands of Tom Marquand for owners Tony Bloom and Ian McAleavy and trainer William Haggas.
The daughter of Golden Horn picked up where she left off from a successful season last year which included her victory in the G2 Park Hill Fillies’ Stakes and runner-up finish in the G1 Prix de Royallieu on Arc weekend. An attempt on another Group 1 is now on her agenda, and Haggas indicated that he will discuss with her owners the possibility of supplementing for the £1 million Coolmore Coronation Cup at Epsom on Derby day.
“She was second in a Group 1 last year and she’s just proved that she’s quick enough to win a Group 2 over a mile and a half,” said the trainer.
“I thought she’d got quicker, her work’s been quicker, she’s a genuine filly. She’ll improve for that. She tries hard and that’s worth a lot.”
A half-sister to the Group 1-winning miler Dreamloper (Lope De Vega), Santorini Star was bred by Olivia Hoare from the Teofilo mare Livia’s Dream. She hails from a family nurtured for generations by Dick Hollingsworth and his nephew Mark Dixon and which includes the Oaks winners Bireme and Talent.
