Gewan, bred in partnership by Overbury Stud and Dukes Stud, claimed Group 1 honours in the Darley Dewhurst Stakes for owner Yuesheng Zhang and trainer Andrew Balding.

The grey Night Of Thunder colt has been beaten only once in his four starts, when fourth in the G2 Champagne Stakes at Doncaster after winning the G3 Acomb Stakes at York in August and is now being quoted by Paddy Power at 10/1 for next year’s 2,000 Guineas.

“We were saying before the race that he was overpriced, because his York performance was very good and we thought you had to forgive him Doncaster,” said Balding of Gewan, who was sent to post at Newmarket as odds of 25/1.

“He was given a brilliant ride by James and he’s a very good horse, this.

“He’s very similar to Chaldean, but the only thing he hasn’t done is win at Doncaster, they’ve followed the same route.

“If you could forgive that Doncaster run he came here with every chance as the Acomb form was rock solid. It’s a relief, but his work at home suggested he would play a part today.”
