Caliyza, Overbury Stud’s sole offering at the the Tattersalls December Mares Sale, topped the first day of trade when selling for 850,000gns to Ace Stud.

Offered during the first of two Sceptre Sessions, the five-year-old mare was given a sensational late update by her half-brother Calandagan, who 24 hours earlier had won the Japan Cup in record-breaking time for his owner-breeder the Aga Khan Studs.

Caliyza had been bought for a partnership including Overbury Stud and Dukes Stud at last year’s sale at 155,000gns.

“As ever, our thanks go to Richard Brown of Blandford Bloodstock for selecting such a lovely mare on our behalf, and to purchaser Ace Stud and underbidder Northern Farm, ” said Simon Sweeting. “Calandagan’s four Group 1 updates throughout the year were very helpful to say the least, and we send our congratulations to Princess Zahra Aga Khan and the team at the Aga Khan Studs for breeding the world’s top-rated racehorse of 2025.

The Tattersalls December Foal Sale also brought some pleasing results for the Overbury draft, notably when selling the Native Trail half-brother to G1 Dewhurst Stakes winner Gewan for 500,000gns. Like Caliyza, he was bought by Yuesheng Zhang os Ace Stud, who is also the owner of Gewan.

On behalf of long-term client Jocelyn Targett we sold a colt from the first crop of Chaldean out of Velma Valento for 115,000gns to Ballyhimikin Stud and McKeever Bloodstock, while a colt and a filly by Triple Time and Sea The Moon each sold for 85,000gns.

Tally-Ho Stud were the shrewd purchasers of the Caturra half-sister to G1 Cheveley Park Stakes runner-up Havana Anna at 35,000gns.

Summing up a successful week at Tattersalls following an excellent year on the track for Overbuy graduates, Sweeting added, “None of this would be possible without the excellent team of people we have at home and the wonderful land available to us at Overbury Stud. This is testament to the hard work of everyone involved at the farm, and the support of some loyal and longstanding clients and partners.

“I’d like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone involved, as well as to all the purchasers of our stock. We wish you all the very best of luck.”
