Kayf Tara’s Rathlin lands Irish Grade 2 Chase

Mouse Morris-trained seven-year-old wins the Nas Na Riogh Novice Chase in style  27 February 2012

 

He may not hold any entries for Cheltenham but Kayf Tara’s son Rathlin looks likely to be a dominant force in Ireland’s spring festivals after landing the Grade 2 Nas Na Riogh Novice Chase over 2m4f at Naas on Sunday.

Trained for Gigginstown House Stud by Mouse Morris, the seven-year-old took control of the race with five fences left to jump and stuck to his task in game fashion to finish eight and a half lengths clear of his nearest rival Shot From The Hip.

Rathlin was bred in Britain by Carrie Zetter-Wells and is out of the bumper winner Princess Timon, by Terimon. He has been offered for sale three times at three different auction houses, making £26,000 as a two-year-old at DBS in 2007, €68,000 when offered in the following year’s Derby Sale at Tattersalls Irelenad, then £85,000 at Brightwells’ April Sale at Cheltenham in 2009 just ten days after finishing second on debut in a point-to-point.

He joins Hennessy Gold Cup winner Carruthers, Planet Of Sound, Micheal Flips, Kaffie and Magnifique Etoile on Kayf Tara’s list of black-type performers for the season.
