Ascot double for Kayf Tara

Another good Staurday as Carole's Destrier claims Listed glory and Thistlecrack impresses over hurdles
14 February 2015

Carole’s Destrier became the latest black-type winner for Kayf Tara when landing the Listed Weatherbys Hamilton Chase at Ascot on Saturday for owner Carole Skipworth and trainer Neil Mulholland.

The consistent seven-year-old gelding, who was bred by Larkinglass Ltd from the winning Midnight Legend mare Barton May, has now won twice over hurdles and twice over fences, as well as finishing second on five occasions, all from just 15 career starts.

Mrs Skipworth’s colours have been carried to success in the past by another talented son of Kayf Tara, the giant Mad Max, who won the G2 Manifesto Novices’ Chase at Aintree among his six career victories.

Later on the card, Thistlecrack made it three wins from six starts when scorching home under Ruby Walsh to claim a decisive victory in the two-mile novices’ hurdle for owners John and Heather Snook.

A son of the winning chaser Ardsown, by Ardross, Thistlecrack was bred at Cobhall Court Stud by Robin and Scarlett Knipe.

On Friday, five-year-old Rons Dream augmented her recent victory with some black type when finishing second to Uranna in the Listed Jane Seymour Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle at Sandown.

Kayf Tara’s terrific season sees him once again leading all National Hunt stallions in Britain and in seventh position on the jump sires’ table for Britain and Ireland with a winners-to-runners strike rate of 29 per cent. His prize-money tally of £977, 385 is more than £600,000 clear of his nearest pursuer in Britain, Dr Massini.
