Regally-bred Polly Potter a bumper mare to watch 16/02/09

An article in today’s Racing Post shows Kayf Tara to be the leading British-based sire of bumper winners. From September 2007 he has sired 21 winners and 30 place-getters of National Hunt flat races, among them the highly promising Grade Two winner Mad Max and Cheltenham Champion Bumper hopeful Jau, who is a half-brother to Sergeant Cecil.

Denman’s close relative Polly Potter failed to add her name to the roll of winners on Thursday but judging from her battling run up the long Chepstow straight to take third place, it won’t be long before she has the number one recorded in her form figures. The Alan King-trained mare races for her breeders James and Jean Potter and is out of a Strong Gale half-sister to Denman. Jumping pedigrees don’t get much better than that.

The winning hurdler from the race immediately prior to Polly Potter’s at Chepstow was a member of Kayf Tara’s first crop who has not come through the traditional bumper route and that’s because Kayf Aramis is a three-time winner on the flat. Add to that the seven year-old’s ten flat placed efforts and another four places over hurdles and you can imagine the level of enjoyment he has brought to his owner/breeder Isobel Phipps Coltman.
