Dams of Donna Blini and Prime Defender return to Bertolini 09/03/09

It was on Guineas weekend in May 2005 that Donna Blini dropped the first hint of her talents. From the first crop of Bertolini, the two-year-old filly won a five-furlong Newmarket maiden on her racecourse debut and would return to the Rowley Mile twice more that year to add the G2 Cherry Hinton Stakes and the G1 Cheveley Park Stakes to her extremely impressive résumé.

In rounding off her juvenile season with her triumph in the Cheveley Park, Donna Blini also became her sire’s first Group One winner, so we’re naturally delighted that her dam, the Lyphard’s Special mare Cal Norma’s Lady, who is owned by Gordon Thom, has returned to Overbury Stud to be covered by Bertolini again this season. She visited the stallion on Friday, the same day that the dam of another of Bertolini’s most notable performers was also booked in to return to him. Arian Da was originally sent to Bertolini in his second season at stud, the mating producing the dual Listed winner Prime Defender.

Bred by Christopher Mason, five-year-old Prime Defender has amassed more than £123,000 in prize-money from his four wins and seven placed efforts, which included finishing runner-up by a neck to Ancien Regime in the G3 Champagne Lanson Sprint Stakes at Sandown last season.

We wish both breeders the very best of luck and look forward to hearing news of the full siblings to two of Bertolini’s best Stakes winners next year.
