Bertolini’s winning spree continued with ten winners in the week between 13 and 20 June – and once again they were spread across the globe, this time in eight different countries.
A Sandown double was recorded in two hemispheres on Saturday, 13 June with four-year-old Brassini winning his fifth race at Sandown in the UK while three-year-old New Zealand-bred Trustus notched a third win at Sandown in Melbourne. Brassini was bred by Mr and Mrs Toye from Silver Spell (Aragon) and Trustus is a son of the Scenic mare Southdown.
The breeding partnership of Stanley Estate & Stud Co and Mount Coote Stud will have been thrilled by the efforts of Gwynedd (ex Bethesda by Distant Relative), who became Bertolini’s seventh two-year-old winner of the campaign with a second start win over five furlongs at Lingfield. Meanwhile, another three-year-old struck in the southern hemisphere when Realism (ex Excelsior by Happy Melody) recorded back-to-back wins at Awapuni.
The international flavour was maintained the following day with winners in Italy, Switzerland and Norway. Debbys Boy, who was bred by Robert Percival from the Petong mare Zilkha, shed his maiden tag with victory in the Prix des Peupliers at the Swiss track Avenches while sprinter Rio Ther, a six-year-old entire from his sire’s first crop recorded his seventh victory at Livorno in Italy over the five furlongs. The Claire Hollowood-bred filly Juvenlini took advantage of Ovrevoll’s speedy 900m event to gain her second win in Norway.
Memphis Man, a product of Richard and Tessa Watson’s successful Manor Farm Stud, is another of Bertolini’s first-crop sons who is clearly still very much in love with the game as advertised by his ninth career win at Windsor on 15 June. His busy career has also seen his placed on 21 occasions.
In Singapore, four-year-old gelding Financier (ex All About Money by One Pound Sterling) won a mile maiden at Kranji on 19 June. That same evening, Red Rosanna landed the five-furlong handicap on the first night of racing at Newmarket’s July course this year. The tough three-year-old, who is a daughter of the Emarati mare Lamarita and was bred by J R Mitchell, had been second at Leicester the previous day and also won at Pontefract as a two-year-old.

Sadly the Hawk wing yearling filly had to put down 24 hours after her operation. She was in alot of pain which the vets couldn't reduce with drugs so they felt it was best to put her out of her misery. Although we are now left with just a very large bill for her care at least I know that everything that could have been done was done.
We are also going to be looking for a new permenant member of staff this autumn as Vikki Chorley is leaving us after 4 years to ride eventers. Vikki was in charge of one of the yards so is a senior member of staff and I expect will be hard to replace.

After reporting some Overbury bred winners last week we are now experiencing the flipside of breeding (or generally looking after livestock).
The yearling out of Flying Finsh - a filly by Hawk Wing - showed signs of colic on monday. She was checked by a vet who gave some pain killer and muscle relaxant. There was no sign of a twisted gut and she settled back to normal very quickly. All was well until wednesday morning when she again showed signs of colic, but this time her heart rate and temperature where raised. She went straight into the vets clinic where an infection in her gut - peritonitis - was confirmed. We had hoped that a heavy dose of antibiotisc might cure the problem but this morning she sickened quite rapidly. The vets advice was then there was no choise other than to operate and hope to find a problem. I have just been told that they have found an abscess on the outside of the gut which will have to be removed. Chance of sucess is rated at less than 50% and the operation is an expensive one. The only good thing is that if she survives there shouldn't be any recurring problems as a result of this.
In the meantime we just have to wait and hope.
(I'm away until the end of next week but will give a follow up on my return).
