Gewan, bred by Overbury Stallions with our great friend Charlie Wyatt of Dukes Stud, continued his unbeaten rise through the ranks with a battling victory in the G3 Tattersalls Acomb Stakes at York on Wednesday.
The Night Of Thunder colt, out of Grey Mystere (Lethal Force), joins a list of recent winners of the seven-furlong contest which includes 2,000 Guineas winner Chaldean, who was also trained at Kingsclere by Andrew Balding, and Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Phoenix Of Spain.
“He’s a horse we’ve always liked from the moment he came into the yard,” said Balding.
“He’s a son of Night Of Thunder who has done everything right since the first day and we liked the way he won at Newbury and we were always keen to come here.
“I think he’ll stay a mile no problem next year but we’ll probably stick at seven this year.”
Continuing an excellent day for Overbury, Golden Horn’s progressive daughter Santorini Star won the fifth race of her career from only nine starts when landing the Sky Bet Stayers’ Handicap for Tony Bloom and William Haggas.
Bred by Olivia Hoare, the four-year-old filly could now be aimed at the G1 Prix de Royallieu on Arc weekend.
